DVD Recording Tests

- Writing Performance

Teac and Memorex drives support both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW media formats. According to manufacturers specifications the two drives have the same recording speeds.

On the left we can see the DVD-R/RW recording speeds that both drive support.

In this screenshot are the DVD+R/RW writing speeds for both drives

The following pictures come from Nero, after successful burnings with both drives. The amount of data is the same for all the tests.

  • Ritek 4x DVD-R

  • Pioneer 4x DVD-R

  • TDK 4x DVD-R

  • Memorex 4x DVD+R

  • Sentinel 2.4x DVD+RW

Teac DV-W50D and Memorex Dual X1 adjust the recording speed according to this one that is supported by the inserted blank DVD disc. In the following table you can see the maximum permitted writing speeds with various media, among with the writing times.

-DVD+RW Packet Writing Tests

Both drives support packet writing with DVD+RW and DVD-RW media. To test the performance with the DVD+RW format, we formatted a 4x DVD+RW disc by Ricoh and started the drag'n drop process, using an 412 MB file (412.822 KB). With the background formatting in full progress, we wrote down the reading / writing performance.

Average Writing
Average Reading
Teac DV-W50D
9:09 min / 0.55X
3:41min / 1.38X
Memorex Dual X1
9:14 min / 0.55X
3:44 min / 1.36X

As we can see from the table above both recorders performed almost the same and gave back approximately the same results. This is logical because the drives, as we mention before, are having the same main chipset.
