Sony has provided more and interesting details about its next-generation PlayStation console.

Speaking to Wired, Sony is promising that the PS5 will support 8K graphics, 3D audio, super fast SSDs, and backwards compatibility with existing PlayStation 4 games.

Mark Cerny, the lead system architect for the PS4, says that the new console is powered by entirely new hardware, including an eight-core CPU based on AMD’s third-gen Ryzen line built on the chip company’s latest 7nm Zen 2 process and a custom GPU based on AMD’s Radeon Navi hardware, which will bring ray-tracing graphics to a game console for the first time. This means that the the PS5 will support 8K graphics.

The new gaming console will also support 3D audio for more immersive gaming both on TV speakers and headphones. It also have the HDD replaced with an SSD, which Sony promises will improve load time and gameplay beyond anything possible with a hard drive.

Other details that Sony revealed include the fact that it’ll be backwards compatible with existing PlayStation 4 games. There will still be physical copies of games to buy, not just downloads.

The company has also confirmed that the existing PSVR headset will continue to work with the PlayStation 5.

Besides the hardware details, a main concern among gamers is the price of the new Playstation console. It would be nice to Sony pricing it at $400, and not any higher.

Price competition is expected to be fierce this generation as streaming services begin to lower the barrier for a certain kind of console experience and as Xbox seems ready to release a lower-priced entry-level console along with whatever will be considered the competition for the PS5. Microsoft is also moving on its subscription services in order to produce more ongoing revenue from Xbox users.

There’s still no release date yet for the PS5, but you could safely expect in 2020.
