USB TravelDrives from Memorex

USB TravelDrives from Memorex

Consumer Electronics Mar 22,2005 0

U3 and Memorex announced today that Memorex will introduce a new line of USB flash drives with built-in U3 support. U3?s software and hardware specification will enable select Memorex TravelDrives? to carry and run software applications and system utilities on any host PC, further increasing the versatility of these tiny, highly portable, data storage devices. Memorex expects to ship U3 powered TravelDrives to national retailers later this year.

Memorex is the leader in consumer digital storage products, including recordable CD and DVD media, media accessories, optical drives and USB 2.0 flash drives. U3 has developed a platform for license by device manufacturers, and has assembled a community of software developers who support the U3 platform by creating applications that will work on smart USB flash drives.

"The Memorex brand is widely recognized and trusted by consumers who are looking for cutting-edge technology products that are readily available in consumer electronics retail locations," said Allen Gharapetian, vice president of marketing and product development of Memorex. "Building our highly praised TravelDrive products with U3 technology indicates just how serious we are about bringing flash storage innovations to every consumer; just as we have done in the optical storage category for more than a decade."

"We believe that the next generation of personal computing is going to be made possible by the smart USB flash drive," said Kate Purmal, chief executive officer of U3. "Consumers won?t have to carry around a laptop or any wireless device to stay productive; instead they?ll have their desktops on one of their favorite smart USB flash drives. This couldn?t have been possible before without the research, patented computing technology and expertise from the USB flash drive market leaders."

The U3 platform includes three components. U3?s hardware specification gives manufacturers the core technology to build their smart USB flash drives. The U3 software developer kit includes sample code, a standard set of application programming interfaces (APIs), and thorough documentation. The U3 Launchpad is a friendly graphical user interface that is used to access and run applications.
