New Samsung VR Headsets To Be Improved Upon HoloLens, Magic Leap

New Samsung VR Headsets To Be Improved Upon HoloLens, Magic Leap

Enterprise & IT Dec 16,2016 0

Samsung plans to launch two new virtual reality headsets, which will build upon technology from Magic Leap and Microsoft’s HoloLens.

Speaking at the Virtual Reality Summit in San Diego on Thursday, Dr. Sung-Hoon Hong, Vice President of Samsung Electronics, said that the Samsung Gear VR 2 "will be presented in a short time" and that the second Samsung VR device will build upon technology from Magic Leap and Microsoft’s HoloLens.

The new Gear VR 2 will offer augmented reality features, with users to be able to interact with virtual experiences in the real world, according to Sung-Hoon.

"It’s like playing Pokemon Go and finding Pikachu in a tree - but you’re able to move the leaves of the tree aside to reach Pikachu, Hong explained."

Samsung is developing a light field engine, Sung-Hoon said, which could be used with Samsung’s holograph technology to offer "a very realistic, touchable experience."

Samsung is considering a collaboration with Magic Leap, the beleaguered Florida startup that promises incredibly lifelike mixed reality, although there no concrete partnerships were mentioned.

Hong said that he expects Samsung to unveil the technology at the 2017 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Mixed reality headsets like HoloLens remain more expensive than virtual reality ones, and most are awkward to wear in public settings.
