Google Develops Uber Competitor: report

Google Develops Uber Competitor: report

Enterprise & IT Feb 2,2015 0

Members of Uber's app-based transportation company are reportedly confused and under pressure by the plans of its bigger inverstor -- Google. Google Ventures, the search giant's venture capital arm, has invested hundernds of million dollars in Uber since its establishemnt in 2013. But while most of us would expect Google to eventually acquire Uber, it seems that the searc giant's plans is to even create a competitive service.

Citing a person close to the Uber board, Bloomberg reports that David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer and a member of Uber's board of directors in 2013, has informed Uber's board of the possibility
Google to prepare its own ride-hailing service, most likely in conjunction with its long-in-development driverless car project.

Drummond's words left executives at Uber deeply concerned, the report added. Besides the obvious dependence on the search giant in terms of capital, Uber also uses smartphone apps based on Google Maps, and could not afford lossing access to the leading mapping application.

Google has been trying to revolutionize transportation with autonomous vehicles. The company recently said the driverless car technology in development within its Google X research lab is between two and five years from being ready for widespread use.

If Google move into the ride-sharing market alone, uber would also
find itself without a partner in the future where cars without steering wheels roam the streets.

Neither Google nor Uber spokespersons provided any comment.
