Dutch Philips Electronics' Chief Executive Gerard Kleisterlee repeated on Monday that China would play an important role in the company's growth strategy. Philips said in a statement that research and development activities in China would be stepped up and the already strong position of the Philips brand would be further bolstered by cross-company marketing programs.

Philips is Europe's largest maker of consumer electronics and lighting and number three in semiconductors.
