Toshiba Matsushita Reduces Thickness of Notebook PC LCD Panel by Half

Toshiba Matsushita Reduces Thickness of Notebook PC LCD Panel by Half

Consumer Electronics Oct 18,2005 0

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TAEC) has developed an ultra thin (2.75 mm) LCD display for notebooks, which is about 50% thinner compared to current available products. The resolution of this 11.1-inch panel is 1366 x 768. The company has achieved to manufacture this 2.75 mm display panel by aplying a new design, which integrates LCD driving circuits directly on the surface of the LCD glass, by adapting a thinner LED-based backlighting system, as well as by positioning the printed circuit board (PCB) adjacent to the glass rather than on the backside of the LCD display module. The company employed the same 0.3 mm-thick glass substrate used in the existing products.

Toshiba Matsushita also reduced the panel weight along with its thickness. The panel weigh only 146 g, which is a 35% reduction compared to the current products. Its size is 255 x 158.9 x 2.75 mm, and its luminance is 240 cd/m2, according to Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology.

The prototype of the device will be showcased at "FPD International 2005" event held in Taipei October 19, 2005.

In addition, the company claims the development of the world's lowest power sub-2.5W 14.1-inch XGA (1024 x 768 resolution format) and 2.7W 14.1-inch SXGA+ (1400 x 1050 resolution format) thin film transistor (TFT) displays for mobile PCs.

Typical power consumption of 14.1-inch SXGA+ displays today is found to be in the range of 3.5-4.4W3. "TMD's development significantly accelerates fulfillment of the 2.5W goal that further extends battery life compared to the current generation of notebook displays," said Kamal Shah, display strategy and mobility enabling manager, Mobile Platforms Group, Intel, and the chairman of the Mobile PC EBL-WG.

The new sub-2.5W 14.1-inch XGA display offers a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution and a viewing area of 11.3 inches (in) x 8.5in (287.7 millimeters (mm) x 216.3 mm). Module dimensions are 11.8in x 8.9in x 0.2maximum in (298.5mm x 226.5mm x 6.0 maximum mm). Power is 2.38W based on Intel's EBL-WG2 measurement method.
