Renesas Technology's 1-Gigabyte Compactflash Card

Renesas Technology's 1-Gigabyte Compactflash Card

Optical Storage Oct 20,2003 0

Renesas Technology America, Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of the new joint-venture semiconductor company established by Hitachi, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, today announced a 1-Gigabyte (1-GB) CompactFlash® card Type I, the HB28J1000CCC, which offers a very fast write speed of 10 Megabytes per second (10MB/s). The Type-I card (3.3 mm thick) can replace small hard disk drives (HDDs) in telecommunications equipment and industrial applications. The robust, large-capacity media is also an excellent match for storing the increasingly large files characteristic of PDAs, high-resolution digital still cameras, security systems and various multimedia products. Its high data-write speed allows quicker file storage for large-volume digital content such as video.

With the 1-GB card, about 16 hours of voice (MP3) data or about 30 minutes of video (MPEG-2) data can be downloaded in approximately 1 minute 40 seconds. The combination of fast write speed and 1-GB storage makes the CompactFlash card particularly ideal for digital still-picture and video cameras. In still-picture cameras, it can store many files containing high-quality images, and its data writing speed allows photographers to take pictures in rapid succession to capture rapidly changing action.

The 1-GB CompactFlash card contains eight Renesas Technology 1-Gbit AG-AND type flash memory chips that use multi-level cell flash technology. The device's write speed is five times faster than, and its capacity twice the size of, the Renesas 512-MB CompactFlash card currently in volume production. The HB28J1000CCC card also is enhanced to support Version 2.0 of the CompactFlash specifications, which were announced by the CompactFlash Association (CFA) in June of this year.

Renesas Technology produces a wide range of CompactFlash cards and other types of flash memory cards. Thus, in a related move to expand its flash product portfolio, the company today announced that it is currently developing a 4-GB PC-ATA card, Type II (5.0 mm thick). That product, to be designated the HB28J4000ACH, will contain 32 AG-AND type 1-Gbit flash memory chips, achieve a 10-MB/second write speed, and comply with PC Card Standard ATA and True-IDE specifications. Scheduled for introduction in spring 2004, the 4-GB PC-ATA card will offer faster data processing as a silicon disk. The device will provide a high-speed storage capability for telecommunications and industrial applications, be useful as a PC external storage medium, and make an excellent replacement for small HDDs.
