New Intel Atom Processor-Based Storage Platform Powers Personal Cloud

New Intel Atom Processor-Based Storage Platform Powers Personal Cloud

PC components Oct 4,2012 0

Intel today announced its next-generation Intel Atom processor-based storage solution, powered by the Intel Atom processor D2550 or the Intel Atom processor D2500. Intel's Atom processor-based storage solution (formerly codenamed "Milstead") has been designed t ohelp users better organize, protect and share their data. Powered by Intel Atom processor D2550 and Intel Atom processor D2500, this solution combines increased multimedia capabilities, energy efficiency and high performance.

The Intel Atom processor-based storage solution features built-in hardware acceleration for HD content, supports multiple OSs, including Microsoft Windows and Linux and enables cross-platform file sharing. Software-based RAID is also supported aas well as four to six SATA drives with hot-plug capability of up to 14 USB ports. The platform also supports digital display and dual display and up to 4 GB of main memory.

"Intel's next-generation Atom processor provides an ideal solution for powering intelligent storage system designs that will act as a personal cloud inside the office or home, and will deliver better ways to store and access data," said David Tuhy, general manager, Intel Storage Division. "With a range of systems designers on board, the Intel Atom processor-based storage solution raises the bar in how data is stored, managed and shared."

Companies such as Asustor, QNAP and Thecus are launching storage solutions today, with others coming onboard in the near future.

The new storage solutions are offering businesses a centralized backup option of all connected devices along with remote replication for backups. Employees can access files from work, home or on the road on any connected device. For businesses that want to maintain physical control of their files, the solution allows Web-based access to data stored on the device. Businesses can also attach two monitors to a single storage device and view up to four IP camera feeds.

This solution also supports security from McAfee. Support for McAfee AV SDK and VirusScan Enterprise for Linux helps ensure that data is safe from viruses and malware.

In a consumer environment, the solution can serve as a centralized media platform for storing movies, music, video games and other content that can then be played on a range of connected devices. Built-in hardware acceleration allows consumers to connect HDMI-ready displays and watch 1080p HD video. Last but not least, it delivers a personal cloud that enables family and friends to access files remotely using a variety of connected devices.

Asustor, QNAP, and Thecus are launching storage solutions on this platform today, with other companies launching in the near future.
