JVC Becomes a Member of Blu-ray Disc Association

Optical Storage Oct 11,2004 0

JVC has joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, further strengthening the already overwhelming support for the Blu-ray Disc high-definition optical-disc format among the world's leading consumer electronics and PC companies. JVC becomes one of the first companies to join the newly formed Blu-ray Disc Association. The BDA was created to broaden the opportunities for other companies to help develop, promote and establish Blu-ray Disc as an industry standard for high-definition optical storage.

"JVC's decision to join in the development and promotion of the Blu-ray Disc format adds to the tremendous support we enjoy within the consumer electronics industry," said Maureen Weber, chief BDA spokesperson and General Manager of HP's Optical Storage Solutions Business, on behalf of the Blu-ray Disc Association. "We expect many, many more companies representing all segments of the consumer-electronics, PC and optical media industries to soon join them as members of the BDA."

"We joined the Blu-ray Disc Association because Blu-ray Disc is the better technology for content owners and consumers," said Masahiko Tsuruta, Associate Director, Corporate R&D of JVC. "And if you look at the number of companies supporting Blu-ray Disc, and who they are, it's also clear the consumer electronics industry is firmly behind the Blu-ray Disc format."

More than 200 companies attended information meetings this summer in the United States and Japan to learn how they can join the BDA and participate in the future development of the Blu-ray Disc format and help develop, promote and establish Blu-ray Disc as an industry standard for high-definition optical storage. The BDA began accepting applications for membership last month, and the organization was officially launched in Tokyo on October 4, 2004.

About the Blu-ray Disc Association: The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) is responsible for establishing format standards and promoting and further developing business opportunities for Blu-ray Disc -- the next-generation optical disc for storing high-definition movies, photos and other digital content.
