BDA: UHD Blu-ray Discs And Players Post Sold Well In 2016
Consumers bought an impressive 1.8 million UHD Blu-ray discs in the United States in 2016, along with 300,000 UHD Blu-ray players, according to data cited by the Blu-ray Disc Association.
The disc-to-player attach rate was an impressive 6-to-1, noted the BDA, adding that sales have been three times as fast as the launch of Blu-ray. Studios released 110 titles on UHD Blu-ray in 2016. Another 250 are expected by the end of 2017.
During CES, LG Electronics and Sony touted their first players, both expected to come out in the spring, and Samsung promoted its second-generation UHD Blu-ray player.
"We anticipate consumer demand for UHD Blu-ray players to grow at more than two times in 2017," said Joseph Stinziano, EVP of Samsung Electronics America, during a CES press conference last week.
Other manufacturers with players available or on the way include Funai, Oppo, Panasonic and Microsoft (Xbox).
BDA anticipates that one in four households will have a UHD TV set by the end of 2017.
