Sensio 3D Format Standardized in DVD Standard

Sensio 3D Format Standardized in DVD Standard

Optical Storage Jan 28,2009 0

The DVD Forum has officially approved the Sensio 3D video technology as an optional DVD standard, the first step towards incorportation of 3D movie technology into the DVD Format Specifications. From now on, manufacturers wishing to integrate the SENSIO 3D format in their electronic equipment will have to do so in accordance with globally recognized specific standards and directives. This is the very first 3D format to be recognized by a standards organization for the distribution of 3D content in the consumer market.

"After 10 years of investment, development and commitment, we are extremely happy to be rewarded in this way, and that our format has been recognized by a standards organization. We are confident that this certification will have a positive impact on manufacturers, and that it will enable us to facilitate and accelerate the integration of our technology into products for the consumer market", explained Nicholas Routhier, President and CEO of SENSIO.

In 2008, a process to add a 3D video specification to DVD was launched. In order to collect information about the various 3D methods and technologies available, a wide appeal was done. Several companies submitted their technology to be standardized for DVD. At the end of the assessment, the only format to be kept and included in the DVD standard is SENSIO 3D, as this was the only one to satisfy the criteria set out by the DVD Forum.

The SENSIO 3D technology is compatible with all existing and future CODECs such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or VC1 and allows the high-quality distribution of 3D content through conventional 2D channels and playback on any display device, including plasma TVs, HDTV and glass-free 3D displays.

3D content is converted into the SENSIO 3D format which can then be sent over any conventional 2D channel without any special hardware or software modification. SENSIO 3D is a visually lossless 2:1 stereoscopic compression format that Combines both eye views of a 3D movie into a single stream.

3D high definition decoder, which also features JVC?s real time 2D to 3D conversion technology, decodes SENSIO 3D content and formats it in a plurality of supported stereoscopic formats ranging from anaglyphic, 3D DLP to dual stream and alternating images (page flipping).

Once decoded, the 3D content can be formatted for regular 2D viewing or any 3D viewing mode, compatible with all display devices.
