RIM Showcases Blackberry 10 Features

RIM Showcases Blackberry 10 Features

Smartphones Sep 25,2012 0

RIM outlined some of the features of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system at a conference for mobile applications developers in San Jose, California. The first BB10 devices, set to be launched in early 2013, will run on a new operating system that RIM says will offer a faster and smoother user interface, and a better platform for apps.

The new operating system is being designed to make it easier to find and use multiple applications simultaneously by swiping a finger across the phone's display screen instead of having to press on a home button to navigate through a menu of programs.

'BlackBerry Flow'provides a series of minimized windows on users' screens that show them all the apps they?re currently running, and it lets them easily flip through them.

BlackBerry Hub is BB10's message center will let users manage messages sent through multiple email accounts, BlackBerry Messenger, text messages and social networking sites. The Hub also notifies users when they have an appointment of a meeting coming up.

RIM said that its BlackBerry App World store will start selling music, movies and television shows.

RIM also promises BlackBerry 10 will offer more security features, better calendar management features and more tools to connect with other workers. In an effort to make its phones better suited for employees who want to use their personal phones for work instead of relying on employer-issued devices, the BB10 includes a feature called "BlackBerry Balance." That enables users to toggle between two different menus of applications and services, one set up for personal stuff and the other programmed for work.

RIM Chief Executive Thorsten Heins said despite the fierce competition and market challenges, the company was able to add subscribers in the quarter ended September 1. The BlackBerry subscriber base has risen to 80 million from the 78 million the company reported earlier this year.

Heins added that the company was getting positive feedback on its new BlackBerry 10 devices from the carriers that had had previews of the new smartphones.
