Philips Unveils Semiconductor Solutions at IFA 2005

Philips Unveils Semiconductor Solutions at IFA 2005

Consumer Electronics Aug 30,2005 0

Philips announced a series of new semiconductor solutions for advanced consumer electronics applications in the home. These include a complete system solution for digital TVs for the European market, a development kit for IP set-top boxes (STBs), a Class D amplifier for flat panel TVs and a video decoder enabling TV on the PC. These solutions will be demonstrated during IFA 2005 at the Hotel Berlin, along with other semiconductor solutions from Philips that are bringing entertainment, information and services to the Connected Consumer both in the home and on the move. +

Enabling digital TV

Building upon the Nexperia TV810 system solution for hybrid analog and digital TVs in the United States, Philips introduces the Nexperia TV810 DVB semiconductor system solution designed specifically for the European market. The system solution is highly integrated to allow TV manufacturers to quickly bring to market digital TVs. The kit offers support for PAL/SECAM and DVB-T, features including advanced picture improvement algorithms, MP3 playback and JPEG digital photo display.

Philips will also demonstrate its latest IF demodulator for analog and digital TV reception. Philips' TDA989x supports all world-wide analog and digital TV standards and has advanced features to improve picture quality in areas with poor reception. The chip reduces the number of external components needed, simplifying design and reducing the bill of materials for manufacturers. Loewe is already using this chip to build front-end TV solutions with optimal reception of analog, DVB-T as well as DVB-C services. At IFA, Loewe will demonstrate a complete range of new LCD-TVs with hybrid reception, incorporating Philips' solution.

Driving the IP STB market

The IP STB market is evolving quickly with consumers wanting to access and playback digital content from the Internet on their TV. At IFA, Philips will demonstrate a complete development kit. Based on the Philips Nexperia PNX855x Home Entertainment Engine, the STB810 enables rapid development of IP and broadcast STBs with features such as video telephony, picture improvement algorithms, time-shift recording, DVD playback, storage and personal video recording. The STB810 is also offered with a choice of Linux and WinCE programming environments to provide STB manufacturers the design flexibility they need in this emerging market.

This solution has already been designed-in by TeleGent GmbH, a provider of STB platforms to ODMs and OEMs. The platform, called Evolution1, will run on Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 operating system and enable cost-effective STB solutions for playback of content from cable and wireless IP sources.

Audio solutions for flat panel TVs

Philips has developed a family of Class D amplifiers designed specifically for flat panel TVs. At IFA, Philips will demonstrate the TDA8932T Class D amplifier. This one chip solution meets the design constraints faced by flat panel TV manufacturers, including limited board space and low power requirements, and delivers high quality audio.

Enhanced TV on your PC

Philips is empowering consumers to enjoy advanced TV functionality on their PC with its integrated PCI Express(TM) dual global video and stereo decoder for digital home PC desktops and notebooks. The new PCI Express AV decoder -- which can be incorporated into a PC-TV card or incorporated directly onto the motherboard of a PC -- enables PCs to capture multiple broadcast analog and digital TV signals. At IFA, Philips will demonstrate how its solution works with CyberLink PowerCinema to allow consumers to experience advanced features such as the ability to record two channels at once or view one channel while recording another one, or view picture-in-picture.
