Noctua NH-D12L chromax.black
6. Conclusion
Summing up this review, it was fun to see four different coolers being tested under the same conditions, that have different retail prices and different audience and dimensions.
The Noctua NH-D12L Chromax.black is the black version of the already tested NH-D12L, that packs a dual tower design, with low-height and the NF-A12x25r round-frame 120mm fan. The retail package is complete and has the updated Noctua mounting brackets that however don't add much to the performance (compared with the old retail brackets) since we didn't see any major difference with the AMD AM5 7950X CPU processor at both 0.00mm and -7.00mm offset. The product has a nice black satin finish and you can install a second fan as well if you wish. Performance-wise, you can expect the AMD 7950X to perform at normal TDP without thermal throttle, however, due to its small volume and dimensions if you perform intensive tasks, you will get some kind of thermal throttle at the end. Nice product with a high retail price and the build quality you can expect from Noctua. The retail price is around EUR 109.90 / USD 99.90 and has 6 years of warranty.
The Noctua NH-D15S Chromax.black packs an asymmetrical dual-tower heatsink design and hosts a single NF-A15 PWM fan, that has good performance and excellent RAM, case, and PCIe compatibility. The Chromax.black edition comes with a total black look, black fan, and black coated heatsink for that stealth look. Again Noctua has updated their SecuFirm2 multi-socket mounting system with the latest brackets and during our tests with the AMD AM5 7950X, you can gain a very small performance difference with the -7.00mm mount offset. The product comes rated as with best turbo/overclocking headroom, however, we didn't find as great performance gains as we would have expected. The retail price is around EUR 114.00 / USD 140.00 and has also 6 years of warranty.
The Noctua NH-U12S has a classic U single-shaped design and the S-version’s 45mm slim shape guarantees 100% compatibility with tall RAM modules. The product comes with a 120mm fan with PWM support for fully automatic speed control. The retail package is again complete with updated mounts as well. The product includes a Noctua NT-H1 thermal compound and 6 6-year manufacturer’s warranty. For the AMD AM5 7950X the 0.00mm and the -7.00mm brackets don't offer any difference, probably due to the small product dimensions. The product is rated with the AMD 7950X with a medium turbo/overclocking headroom and we can say we agree, of course, it will handle the AMD 7950X at normal TDPs, however, will thermal throttle when overclocking. Its retail price is around 83 Euro and we feel this product has specific uses due to its design and dimensions.
And lastly the Noctua NH-U14S...This is a 14cm top model of Noctua’s classic U-series single-tower CPU coolers. It has a 52mm slime shape and it's armed with six heat pipes design and the NF-A15 140mm fan with PWM support. The product comes with the updated mounting brackets, supporting many different Intel/AMD sockets and this is a product we found to benefit from the -7.00mm mounting offsets we measured up to -2.56 Celsius at the 105TDP (AMD Standard). Compared with other top Noctua CPU coolers, we found the performance to be close to our beloved Noctua NH-U12A (dual fans) at 170 TDP (AMD Standard) and will handle the AMD 7950X at 222TDP and won't thermal throttle, even at long period stress loads. The retail package is complete and users can buy this product for around 94.00 Euro, making it an easy recommendation. The 6 years of full warranty won't be needed probably, but it's nice to include after all.
