Sony might be working on a new version of the PlayStation, according to an exhibit published on the Federal Communications Commission's Web site. Sony requested that the government organization inspect the device to ensure it was within the FCC's guidelines for wireless support. According to the FCC files, it received the sample device back in March.

According to the documents, Sony Computer Entertainment is the applicant and the FCC examined a "computer entertainment system." The system is named "CECH-4001x". Sony's current PlayStation 3 has a CECH-3000 series model number.

Sony did not comment on the FCC documents.
