ICDM to Establish New Display Evaluation Standards Based on Samsung and LG Proposals

ICDM to Establish New Display Evaluation Standards Based on Samsung and LG Proposals

Consumer Electronics Oct 18,2017 0

The International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM), will soon release the Information Display Measurements Standard version version 2 (IDMS 2), an updated standard that will details evaluation methods for display parameters.

ICDM, a committee within in the Society for Information Display (SID), develops and maintains display-related standards, and has released the IDMS 1 (Information Display Measurements Standard version version 1). It describes measurement techniques, defines terminology, and explains what the results mean. It's purpose is to help the display industry provide a common language for display measurements, provide metrics, methods, explanations, and tutorials to help obtain accurate and precise numeric values that define display performance.

But the IDMS 1 standard was released many years ago, when black and white cathode-ray tube televisions first appeared. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics habe now presented new standards and it is likely that these standards will be part of the new IDMS 2 guidelines, set for approval and released by ICDM in February 2018.

The IDMS 2 standards will cover 4K UHD TVs but also next-generation displays such as VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality).

At a previous general meeting, Samsung Electronics presented an objective method that evaluates black and white pixels called SSIM (Structural Similarity). SSIM can objectively and more accurately measure the quality of the colors of displays besides thenumber of their pixels.
