DVD Forum 32nd Steering Committee Meeting Votes

Optical Storage Nov 18,2005 0

The DVD Forum announced its latest decisions made at the 32nd Steering Committee Meeting, November 16/17. The group of companies decided to collaborate with Mt Fuji and MCC on the development of the first HD DVD-R DL media, by disclosing the format information to both companies.

The upcoming HD DVD-Recordable, Rewritable, Re-recordable discs will be compatible to the HD DVD-Video format and will be allowed to be used for recording such content.

Another interesting deceision is that the DVD Forum will establish a special Subcommittee under the Steering Committee to reconsider the recommendation of region control system of the DVD-Video format. The members of the RPC (Regional Playback Control) Subcommittee will decide whether the HD DVD video titles will be regionally controlled. The information had been disclosed earlier during the "DVD Forum Japan Conference 2005" held in Japan last month.

The DVD Forum also updated some already proposed logos and also introduced some new, related to the HD formats. The upcoming HD DVD double layer discs will use the HD DVD-R DL logo to distinguish from the HD DVD-R single layer discs. In addition, the HD DVD-Rewritable media will use the HD DVD-RAM logo. Last, the DVD FOrum officially introduced the HD DVD--Re-Recordable format, which will use the HD DVD-RW logo:

Note that the previously called "HD DVD-RW" is more aligned with DVD-RAM media, since it will be a Random Access medium featuring defect management algorithms in order to offer data storage reliability. In addition, the the HD DVD--Re-Recordable format,is the HD DVD version for the HD DVD rewritable media.

Moreover, the DVD Forum approved the use of DVD-Video protected with CPRM on DVD recordable media.
