Micron Announces Sampling of Low-Power 2-Megapixel CMOS Image Sensor Targeting the Mobile Market

Smartphones Nov 15,2004 0

Micron Technology announced sampling of the new MT9D011 low-power 2-megapixel CMOS image sensor to mobile handset makers, worldwide. Micron's exclusive DigitalClarity(TM) technology delivers exceptional performance capabilities in all lighting situations and is able to accomplish this while drawing very little current from the power supply. With consumers increasingly demanding higher resolution cameras in handsets ranging from cell phones to PDAs and 3G Smartphones, Micron is pleased to provide an image sensor that approaches the richness of true life while maintaining cost advantages only possible through digital photography using CMOS image sensors.

"With this new low-power 2-megapixel CMOS image sensor, Micron is introducing a device into the mobile market that will elevate the image quality level of these handsets for consumers who're seeking memorable -- and printable -- images from their mobile devices," remarked Micron Imaging Group's Director of Marketing, Farhad Rostamian. "We believe as the convergence phenomenon intensifies -- that of better handset-embedded imaging devices occupying, and someday taking-the-place-of, lower resolution DSCs - the need becomes more critical to provide devices which exhibit the highest levels of image quality at the lowest possible costs. Our reputation is one for image quality and reliability, and it's these product attributes our customers have come to expect from Micron. We're confident handset users will find the performance of our image sensors exceeds their expectations, delivering images that compare well with those taken with conventional DSCs."

Micron's new MT9D011 is a 1/3-inch optical format sensor with a 1,600H x 1,200V active pixel design making it a very attractive alternative to other sensors on the market. The sensor is capable of up to 15 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and 30 fps at 800 x 600 resolution, with programmable blanking. It offers electronic rolling shutter (ERS), global reset, windowing, left-right and top-bottom frame reversal -- all on-chip. It also integrates 2x2 binning and offers support for mechanical shutter and efficient interfaces to flash technologies. Additionally, the sensor offers embedded phase-locked loop (PLL) and slew control I/O, both of which are programmable. These features help to enhance picture quality, minimize form factor, reduce the number of additional components the application needs and maximize board space efficiency for manufacturers.
