Toshiba and NEC demonstrate new AOD recorders

General Interest Oct 8,2003 0

Visitors of CEATEC Japan have the chance to see a working prototype of the new Advanced Optical Disc recorder, by Toshiba and NEC. The recorder was also demonstrated in CeBIT, Hanover this year. A 1080p and 20 Mbps movie was recorded on an AOD disk by an MPEG 4 AVC. The movie was playbacked flawlessly for the visitors' pleasure.

Although the AOD format is not yet authorized by the DVD Forum, the first devices have proceeded to the development stage.

NEC plans to develop an AOD recorder for PC usage. During the demonstration, the device was connected to a PC through SCSI interface, and a High definition MPEG-2 video was playbacked.
