Sony Unveils Touch-screen Walkman

Sony on Tuesday unveiled a new touch-screen Walkman X-series with a 3-inch clearer organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display as it seeks to regain dominance in a market now controlled by Apple's iPod digital music player. The X-Series features a 3" OLED touchscreen display (432 x 240) it is available with 16GB or 32GB of internal memory, offers WiFi connectivity (for Youtube video), features DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) for higher quality reproduction of MP3 and ATRAC files, 'Clear stereo' and 'Clear Base' technologies as well as a noise cancellation system.

The devices also come equipped with TV and FM radio tuners. The supported video and audio formats include MP3/HE-AAC/WMA (non-copyrighted), Linear-PCM/ATRAC/ATRAC Advanced Lossless/AAC and AVC (H.264/AVC)/MPEG-4/WMV video files.

With dimensions of 52x96.5x9.8 mm (D x W x H) and a wight of 98g, the new NW-X1000 series of players are highly portable.

The NW-X1000 series, which comes in red and black, will be sold in the Japanese market from April 25 and is scheduled to be sold in the United States, Europe and Canada from early summer, the company said.
