Intercontinental Exchange Inc., the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, said it stopped trying to make a deal for EBay Inc.

“Based on investor conversations following today’s ICE earnings call, ICE has decided to cease exploring strategic opportunities with eBay,” the company said Thursday.

The announcement of a potential acquisition was surprising and had left analysts questioning Intercontinental’s rationale in seeking to own the consumer online marketplace.
