Comcast is launching the new cloud-based X1 TV service in San Francisco and Houston on Wednesday, allowing subscribers to view shows recorded on their DVRs, even away from home. And while inside their homes, subscribers can live-stream programs to any wireless smart phone, tablet or computer.

Comcast also debuted a redesigned the X1 program guide, which offers easier navigation with show photos and a faster search function. The service also includes an iTunes-style online store for customers to buy digital copies of movies and TV shows.

To access the service, subscribers have to upgrade to a company designed and built set top box.

The cable and entertainment conglomerate is trying to convince federal regulators to approve a controversial merger with Time Warner Cable that would make the nation’s largest cable company even bigger. It’s also trying to keep cord-cutting subscribers from cancelling cable TV in favor of Internet services like Netflix.

Earlier this year, TiVo introduced a cloud-based networked DVR prototype, saying it would negotiate with cable operators to bring that service to customers.

Comcast has already rolled out cloud TV in Philadelphia, and in Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago and Washington D.C.
