Apple today released an iOS update addressing location-tracking behavior, and the security of that information on its portable devices. iOS 4.3.3 reduces the size of the "crowd-sourced" location cache, it reduces the size of the cache, it no longer backs the cache up to iTunes and deletes the cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

Products compatible with this software update include the iPhone 4 (GSM model), the iPhone 3GS, the iPad 2, the iPad, the iPod touch (4th generation) and the iPod touch (3rd generation)

Apple also released the iOS 4.2.7 software update for the CDMA version (Verizon) of the iPhone 4. The update contains improvements, bug fixes includingand security updates.

Both updates are available via iTunes.

Apple had promised to release these updates in an open letter last month, responding to privacy concerns related to data stored in iPhones even when their owners has not enabled their device's location-based services.
