Apple has announced a overhaul of its desktop lineup and custom silicon, debuting the all-new 2nm M6 chip alongside the M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra.

The hardware refresh introduces redesigned Mac mini and Mac Studio desktops built for heavy pro workloads, advanced graphics, and on-device agentic AI capabilities.

Next-Generation Apple Silicon Overview

1. The M6 Chip (2nm Architecture)

Built using a state-of-the-art 2-nanometer process, the M6 chip advances every compute block for everyday users, developers, and AI enthusiasts.

  • CPU: 12-core CPU complex (2 Super Cores, 4 Performance Cores, 6 Efficiency Cores) delivering up to 1.2x faster multithreaded speed than M5.

  • GPU & AI: 12-core GPU featuring dedicated Neural Accelerators in each core, paired with a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine for up to 4x faster AI compute than M4.

  • Memory: Up to 32GB unified memory with 170GB/s bandwidth (+10% over M5).

2. The M5 Ultra Chip (Quad-Die Architecture)

Designed for extreme workloads, the M5 Ultra is Apple’s most powerful processor to date, utilizing a quad-die UltraFusion architecture that connects two dual-die M5 Max chips with over 4.4TB/s inter-die bandwidth.

  • CPU: Up to 36-core CPU (12 Super Cores, 24 Performance Cores).

  • GPU & AI: Up to 80-core GPU with per-core Neural Accelerators, delivering up to 4.3x peak AI compute compared to M3 Ultra.

  • Memory: Up to 512GB unified memory with a 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth (+50% over M3 Ultra), enabling local execution of massive LLMs with hundreds of billions of parameters.

  • M5 Ultra Configuration: Up to 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, and up to 512GB unified memory (1.2TB/s bandwidth).
