Maxell boosts recordable DVD performance with 4X DVD-R & 2X DVD-RW media

Maxell boosts recordable DVD performance with 4X DVD-R & 2X DVD-RW media

General Interest Nov 19,2002 0

Maxell Corporation of America, the technology and marketing leader in premium recordable media products, today announced the introduction of the highest speed recordable DVD discs on the market to support the next generation of high-performance DVD drives. Maxell's new 4.7 GB high-speed DVD discs include 4x DVD-R discs for general use and 2x DVD-RW media, and are designed to support new high-performance 4x/2x drives from Pioneer, Sony and others. The 4x DVD-R media supports data transfer rates of 44.32 MB/sec, while the 2x DVD-RW media operates at 22.16 MB/sec. "As the technology leader in recordable DVD media, Maxell is committed to supporting the DVD market by meeting media requirements for the latest technology improvements," said Dawn Wortman, senior marketing manager at Maxell. "Maxell is committing R&D resources and working closely with our hardware partners to ensure the timely development of advanced media solutions for the next generation of DVD technology."

To support the new higher-performance requirements, Maxell enhanced the organic dye recording layer materials of the 4x DVD-R discs to ensure quality recording at 4x write speeds. Maxell DVD-R discs are write-compatible with DVD-R/RW drives, and read-compatible with all recordable DVD drives and current generation DVD-ROM, DVD Video and DVD Audio players. The new 2x DVD-RW discs are based on Maxell's high-quality phase change recording materials and can be re-written up to 1000 times.

Pioneer Electronics announced in October that many of its DVD-R/RW first-generation computer drives and set-top recorders will require a firmware upgrade prior to using new high speed recordable discs. In order to avoid potential damage to both the hardware and the discs, it is very important that owners of these first-generation DVD-R/RW drives and recorders complete this firmware upgrade before using any 4x DVD-R or 2x DVD-RW discs. Along with the performance improvements, Maxell's new 4x DVD-R lineup includes printable surface discs that are certified for professional ink jet and thermal printers. Ideal for developing video and audio presentations or computer software and games that demand a more professional appearance. Maxell's media consists of shiny silver and shiny white discs for custom silk screening or full-surface thermal printing and white matte-surfaced discs for inkjet printing.

Maxell's new 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW discs will be available in February.
