Sony Acquired Onlive

Sony Acquired Onlive

Gaming Apr 3,2015 0

After five years of service, the OnLive Game Service will be coming to an end. Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don’t include a continuation of the game service in its current form. Onlive said that the service would continue uninterrupted until April 30, 2015. No further subscription fees will be charged, and users can continue to play games until that date. Users whose subscriptions renewed on or after March 28 will be refunded.

OnLive's magic relied on allowing its users to play games without latency issues, as the information was passed back and forth between the player and the OnLive servers. But in 2012, OnLive unexpectedly imploded, as founder Steve Perlman unexpectedly sold and restructured the company.

In March 2014, OnLive was reborn with its cloud gaming technology tied in with Valve's Steam service, and the PlayPack, the library of 250 or so older games that was available to users to play for a monthly fee.

Now, OnLive's assets will join Gaikai, the OnLive cloud gaming rival that Sony bought in 2012.
