New Super Hi-Vision CMOS Processes 120FPS Video

Consumer Electronics Feb 23,2012 0

Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) has developed a new 33Mpixel CMOS image sensor capable of processing 120 frames-per-second Super Hi-Vision video (7,680 x 4,320) A single Super Hi-Vision (SHV) video frame consists of approximately 33 million (7680 x 4320) pixels. The company's previous 33M-pixel image sensor, captured video in 60 FPS (progressive). Using a newly developed AD converter (12bit Column-Parallel Pipelined Cyclic ADCs), the new CMOS is capable of shooting at 120 FPS.

The CMOS sensor is manufactured by using 0.18μm process technology and measures 26.5 x 21.2mm. Its pixel count is 7,808 x 4,336. But it is substantially 7,680 x 4,320 when pixels for evaluation are excluded. Each pixel measures 2.8 x 2.8µm.
