Samsung to Deliver First UMA Handset for Europe

Samsung to Deliver First UMA Handset for Europe

Smartphones Aug 23,2006 0

Samsung has launched the world's first Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) WLAN handset, the SGH-P200, incorporating Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120. Marking the beginning of an industry trend in fixed-mobile convergence, the Samsung SGH-P200 handset is available to consumers in Italy.

Samsung is taking advantage of the early availability of the Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 for UMA to provide consumers with access to GPRS and EDGE mobile services on the same handsets using wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which use unlicensed radio spectrum. Consumers will be able to roam and switch between fixed and mobile services to make inexpensive calls without compromising the service or voice quality.

Philips Nexperia cellular system solution 6120 uses the Philips BGW211, a low-power 802.11g WLAN system-in-package that integrates the baseband/MAC, radio, power amplifier and all necessary front-end components to complete the solution. With receiver sensitivity better than -89dBm and transmit power over 20dBm EIRP, improved RF propagation even within a building premises provides consumers with seamless coverage. The support of enhanced Wi-Fi features like Unscheduled Power Save Delivery allows UMA talk time of over nine hours.
