Plextor Showcased M6 SSD Prototype and M.2 Form Factor Drives at IFA

PC components Sep 7,2013 0

Plextor gave a sneak preview of the upcoming M6 Drive and M.2 form factor SSD solutions at the IFA show in Berlin. The M6 is the successor to the Plextor M5 Series. It is a 2,5", 5 mm solid state drive for the consumer market and is scheduled to come in two versions; the Pro version and the the S version aimed at the average computer user. The M6 features the next generation of Plextor's proprietary TrueSpeed technology that works in tandem with the Marvell 88SS9187 controller.

The new drive will also feature Toshiba's A19 Toggle NAND, which is the smallest and fastest performing MLC available. On top, the M6 is flatter than its predecessor featuring an ultra-slim 5 mm casing.

Following the new Ultrabook specifications by Intel, Plextor also displayed new M.2 (also known as New Generation Form Factor or NGFF) SSD solutions. Using a PCIe interface, the Plextor M.2 will overcome the performance bottlenecks of SATA. The new M.2 series has not got a finalized name yet, but the samples shown had lengths of 60 mm and 80 mm. The M.2 series shall will use a Marvell controller and NAND flash from Toshiba.
