Taiwan optical storage drive makers: September revenues

Taiwan optical storage drive makers: September revenues

General Interest Oct 13,2003 0

DigiTimes reports the September revenues of the major Taiwanese optical storage drive manufacturers. Lite-On IT’s September revenues increased by 9.4% month-on-month and 8.9% year-on-year, mainly thanks to sharp growth in shipments of recordable DVD drives. The company shipped 200,000-250,000 recordable DVD drives in September, up from about 100,000 in August, according to sources.

DVD-Dual drives accounted for the majority of the recordable DVD drives shipped by the company last month. Lite-On IT was selling the drives at about US$120 each, and most buyers were from the clone market, sources said.

Sales of slim-type combo drives were another major driver behind the company’s growth. It shipped about 200,000-250,000 slim-type combo drives in September, increasing by 40% month-on-month. The company expects to launch a slim-type DVD+RW drive in late October – two months before the original schedule- and has landed a client with the new product, according to sources.

With new orders from Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lite-On IT expects to further increase its slim-type combo shipments by 150,000 units this month, sources said.

Quanta Storage, the largest slim-type optical drive maker in Taiwan, experienced a 2.8% month-on-month decrease in Taiwan revenues last month, but reported that its consolidated revenues reached US$1.44 billion during the same period, up 2% month-on-month and 117% year-on-year. During the first nine months of this year, the company generated NT$9.67 billion in consolidated revenues, up 121% year-on-year.

Quanta recently obtained approval from clients for its 4x slim-type DVD+RW drives, and expects to start shipping the drives in October, the company said.
