Panasonic introduces third-generation DVD recorder

Panasonic introduces third-generation DVD recorder

General Interest Jun 26,2002 0

Panasonic is launching its third-generation DVD recorder, model DMR-E30. The Panasonic DMR-E30 features the unique Time Slip function, Progressive Scan, and a host of many other convenience features, all in a sleek new package. The DMR-E30 DVD recorder is planned for August introduction, with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $799.95. The new DVD recorder allows consumers to digitally record superb picture and sound -- up to 12 hours on a double-sided DVD-RAM disc, and up to 6 hours on a singlesided DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc(1), thanks to Panasonic's original Hybrid VBR (variable bit rate) technology.

"This new DMR-E30 DVD video recorder builds upon our leadership position in DVD technology," said Alberto Reggiani, Panasonic's National Marketing Manager for DVD products. "Combining the best of all worlds, the DMR-E30 offers recording on DVD-RAM - the perfect solution for recording and re- recording your favorite programs, over 100,000 times on the same disc -- and DVD-R, which is widely regarded as the most compatible of the DVD formats.

"Rewriteable DVD-RAM discs offer huge storage capacity of 4.7 to 9.6 gigabytes per disc and give consumers greater versatility and control over what they want to keep or delete," commented Reggiani. "Because DVD-RAM provides a single format for computer and video-based applications, it provides a practical and flexible way to manage multiple PC video needs."

The unique Time Slip(TM) feature allows viewers to replay a scene recorded 30 seconds earlier without disrupting the recording process, simply by touching a button on the remote.

Time Slip(TM) also allows the recorder's Simultaneous Record and Play function, a convenient feature for recording a favorite TV series. For example, the consumer can watch last week's episode of his/her favorite show while recording this week's, from the same disc at the same time. The DMR-E30 also provides a 16-program timer recording feature.

The DMR-E30 features Progressive Scan, for optimum picture quality when viewing a DVD movie. Progressive Scan doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. The higher-density video signal creates film-like DVD images extraordinarily close to the way they originally appeared in the cinema ? with rich detail, extraordinary depth of field, and precise color reproduction.

In addition to virtually unlimited re-write capability, the DMR-E30 allows you to use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder, or PVR. Recording is instantaneous with the touch of one button. The DMR-E30 will automatically find blank space on the disc and begin recording. Because of DVD-RAM's extremely fast transfer rate you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while at the same time recording the program in progress. And you can do this all from the remote control. In the past, with a VCR, you'd have to wait until the show ends before watching it.

In addition to recording new video content, the DMR-E30 also allows consumers to transfer their favorite VHS tape recordings to space-saving discs. Personal movie libraries and family videos can be archived, preserved, and easily cataloged and accessed.

When connected to home theater components, the DMR-E30 enables consumers to enjoy playback of multiple digital entertainment formats, including DVD video, music CDs, CD-R and CD-RW discs(2). Finding and viewing recorded material is fast and easy because there's no need to search, fast-forward or rewind. The Direct Navigator function lets users instantly access recorded material from an on-screen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles.

The DMR-E30 also provides a major benefit to the video editing enthusiast. The Playlist function lets the user perform simple non-linear video editing -- such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes and creating custom playlists of favorite scenes on a disc.
