Samsung Exynos 880 Brings 5G Speeds to More Affordable Phones
Samsung has unveiled the Exynos 880 processor, a chip designed for mid-range phones.
Built using Samsung’s 8-nanometer FinFET process, the Exynos 880 includes a 5G cellular modem that supports 5G’s sub-6GHz, offering an upload speed of 1.28Gbps and a download speed of 2.55Gbps, That speed can be further lifted to 3.55Gpbs with E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity that combines 5G and LTE capabilities. The Exynos 880 also works with diverse major networks from 2G to 4G, and offers an LTE download speed of 1Gbps.
The octa-core CPU incorporates two Arm Cortex-A77 cores for intensive tasks and six Cortex-A55 cores for always-on tasks. Offering speeds of 2.0Ghz, the Cortex-A77s are responsible for the advanced computing power, while the Cortex-A55 cores clock speeds of 1.8Ghz and provide improved power efficiency for long lasting battery life. The ARM Mali-G76 MP5 GPU, which supports Full HD+ displays and high refresh rates for games, is also identical to what you’ll find on the Exynos 980. It also supports LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 storage, and incorporates a neural processing unit (NPU) and digital signal processor (DSP) for on-device AI. The NPU enables deep learning by accelerating the execution of artificial neural network processes, while the DSP supports efficient operation of intelligent vision applications. The Exynos 880’s NPU and DSP share a controller and Direct-Memory-Access (DMA), which enables faster AI processing.
The Exynos 880 is packed with diverse connectivity features such as Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi, and FM radio. It is designed to support Bluetooth 5 and for a location services, the chipfeatures a 4-mode GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver that supports GPS , GLONASS, BeiDou and Galileo.
Where the Exynos 980 can support up to a 108-megapixel main camera, the Exynos 880 supports up to 64-megapixel main cameras or dual 20-megapixel setups. 4K video recording is supported at up to 30 fps with H.265, H.264 and VP9 codecs.
Vivo just unveiled its Exynos 880-powered Y70s in Asia, with a 48-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel ultrawide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Vivo is also boasting 5G connectivity. The Y70s starts at CNY 1,998, or about $280.
