Mitsubishi Drops DLP Display Business

Mitsubishi Drops DLP Display Business

Consumer Electronics Dec 3,2012 0

Mitsubishi Electric will drop its line of the rear projection TV (RPTV) business, the last major player to leave the dwindling business. Mitsubishi has been the last major player making RPTVs, as other technology firms such as samsung and Sony had previosuly exited the digital light processing (DLP) screen market to make flat-panel LCD displays.

According to a memo obtained by CE Pro and issued by MEVSA president and CEO Junichi Nose, Mitsubishi Electrical Visual Solutions America, Inc. (MEVSA) has sent letters to various service centers informing them the electronics firm is "discontinuing the manufacture of 73", 82" and 92" DLP projection televisions." MEVSA addes that it would focus on B-to-B (projectors, display wall, printers, digital signage, monitors, etc.) and the home theater projector business.

Mitsubishi had a virtual monopoly at the RPTV market since 2009, and last year focused on big-screen DLPs that were less expensive than any flat panels on the market.
