LiteOn LDW-811S DVD±RW recorder - Page 4

DVD reading tests

- Single Layer DVD-ROM (Click for CDSpeed results)

In the DVD single layer read test, in comparison with the Cyberdrive and Optorite drives and noting that all three drives support a maximum reading speed of 12x for DVD-ROM media, the LiteOn LDW-811S is quite fast with an average speed of 9.3x, and the CyberDrive only slightly faster at 9.93x.

The manufacturer's specifications give the LiteOn drive as having a seek time of 160msec for DVD media. NeroCDSpeed reports that the drive needed 169ms for full seek time, 94 ms for 1/3 seek and 85 ms average. The LiteOn performed quite well here giving very fast access times which coincide with the results in the speed test above.

- Dual Layer PTP DVD-ROM (Click for CDSpeed results)

The two layers of a PTP DVD-ROM disc are read sequentially with the drive starting the read process from the inner tracks on the disc, which is the beginning of each layer, and progressing outwards towards to the outer tracks for each layer.

According to the manufacturer, the LiteOn LDW-811S has a maximum reading speed of 8x with dual layer DVD-ROM discs. The drive managed to reach a maximum reading speed of 8.41x and was slightly slower than the Optorite drive. As can be seen from the graph above, the LiteOn drive was only slightly slower than the Optorite DD0401 on all three occasions. Again, it appears to be a quick reader.

Here too, the seek times are quite fast. The drive finished with a random seek time of 89ms, faster than the other drives.

- Dual Layer OTP DVD-ROM

The first layer of an OTP dual layer DVD-ROM is read exactly the same way as the first layer of the PTP disc we tested previously. The difference here is the reading strategy of the second layer on the disc. The beginning of the second layer is located in the outer part of the disc, so the drive starts reading from the outer tracks inwards towards the inner tracks of the disc.

As we have experienced with some other 8x DVD recorders, so too LiteOn seems to have problems reading the dual layer OTP DVD-ROM. The first layer was read flawlessly but at the beginning of the second layer the reading speed fluctuateded. Software playback, however, did not give any noticable problems.

- DVD Ripping Tests

We measured the DVD-Video ripping speed of the LiteOn LDW-811S using the latest version of DVD Decrypter. The DVD Video title is the "Matrix" pressed DVD-Video.

The drive ripped the DVD movie files to the hard disk at 9295 KB/s (6.88x) average. The performance is quite high, considering that the Optorite and Cyberdrive were slower with 4.32x and 5.54x average, respectively.

- DVD Recordable / Rewritable reading Tests

The chart below shows the Nero CDSpeed results with the following media:

  • 8x DVD+R
  • 4x DVD+RW

  • 4x DVD-R
  • 2x DVD-RW

The LiteOn drive did not prove quite as fast a reader with DVD +/- formats. The LiteOn LDW-811s was quite a bit slower than the other two drives used as comparison with reported average reading speeds for all formats being from 4.63x to 4.7x.

As with the minus format, NeroCdSpeed reports that the Optorite drive reads the -R format at an average speed of 4.65x and -RW at 4.63x.
