Google Launches eBook Store

Google Launches eBook Store

Enterprise & IT Dec 6,2010 0

Google today introduced eBooks, an e-book store that is expected to compete with Amazon. Google eBookstore was being rolled out in the United States featuring a massive library of digitized works online at books.google.com.

Visitors of the online store are able to browse and search through the largest ebooks collection in the world with more than three million titles including hundreds of thousands for sale.

Google eBooks are compatible with everything from laptops to netbooks to tablets to smartphones to e-readers, Google said. However, Amazon's Kindle was not on the list of Google-friendly e-readers.

With the new Google eBooks Web Reader, users can buy, store and read Google eBooks in the cloud. That means users can access their ebooks like they would messages in Gmail or photos in Picasa?using a free, password-protected Google account with unlimited ebooks storage.

In addition to a full-featured web reader, free apps for Android and Apple devices will make it possible to shop and read on the go. For many books users can select which font, font size, day/night reading mode and line spacing suits them?and pick up on the page where they left off when switching devices.

Users can discover and buy new ebooks from the Google eBookstore or get them from one of our independent bookseller partners: Powell?s, Alibris and participating members of the American Booksellers Association.

Adobe Content Server 4 Powers the Delivery of PDF and EPUB Content from Google eBooks

Google has licensed Adobe Content Server 4 software as its ebook content protection solution for Google eBooks. Consumers can download and read protected ebooks from Google eBooks in both PDF and EPUB format.

"Launching Google eBooks is an initial step toward giving you greater access to the vast variety of information and entertainment found in books. Our journey has just begun," Google said.

Google has digitized more than 15 million books from more than 100 countries and in more than 400 languages since its Google Books project launched in 2004.
