AMD Set To Announce ARM-based Server on Monday

AMD Set To Announce ARM-based Server on Monday

PC components Oct 26,2012 0

AMD President and Chief Executive Officer Rory Read, and Senior Vice President and General Manager Global Business Units Lisa Su will host a news conference on Monday in San Francisco, where they are likely to announce plans for a SeaMicro server based on an upcoming 64-bit processor design from ARM. At the conference AMD said it would provide updates and more detail on the company?s "ambidextrous strategy." The news conference will take place in San Francisco on Oct. 29, commencing at 1:30 p.m. PDT.

ARM CEO Warren East will be at the event there as a "special guest." AMD is also arranging press briefings at the event with Andrew Feldman, who was CEO of SeaMicro before AMD bought the company this year.

All these suggest that AMD may announce plans to offer a SeaMicro server based on an ARM processor.

SeaMicro has been developing technologies that allow it to build highly dense, power-efficient servers. The technologies include a network fabric that can link thousands of servers at low latency, and a custom chip that replaces most of the components on a standard server board.

SeaMicro was bought by AMD for US$334 million.

AMD also partnered with ARM earlier this year to use its TrustZone security technology in AMD processors, but it hasn't announced any plans yet to build an ARM-based CPU.

ARM will also announce its first 64-bit processor designs at its TechCon conference next week.
