Intel is expected to host a conference for its GPU architecture technologies in December with chief architect Raja Koduri to provide updates about the company's latest technologies and the business unit's outlook.

Intel is planning to release a discrete GPU codenamed Arctic Sound in 2020 and this will be the company's third attempt to cross into the related market. In addition to the gaming market, Intel expects the business to help it expand in the artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning sectors, leveraging its existing CPU advantages.

Intel is currently integrates its GPUs in its chipsets. In 2009's Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Intel unveils the Larrabee architecture for discrete GPUs, but the project was later canceled in 2010.

The company has recruited Raja Koduri, who who used to lead AMD's efforts integrating HBM into GPUs and its LiquidVR project. It has also established a GPU R&D center in Canada and has plans to build a GPU design R&D center in India.

Intel's CPUs still has an over 80% market share in the PC market and over 95% in the datacenter sector, but Nvidia so far still dominates the AI and deep learning field.
