Sony Rewrites the Rules of Super-Telephoto: Announces World's Lightest 400mm and 600mm G Master Primes

Sony Electronics has shattered portability records with the unveiling of two groundbreaking G Master™ super-telephoto prime lenses for its Alpha™ full-frame E-mount system: the **FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS** and the **FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS**. According to Sony, both are the **world's lightest lenses in their respective categories**, redefining what is possible for handheld wildlife, sports, and bird photography.

Headline Specifications & Innovations:
Showering the Competition (in Grams):** The breakthrough feature of these lenses is their astonishingly low weight, both coming in **under 1 kilogram**:
FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS:** Approx. 994g (2.2 lbs)
FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS:** Approx. 995g (2.2 lbs)

Optimized Balance for Handheld Mastery:** Sony did not just make them light; they made them agile. The internal optical design features fewer front elements and shifts the center of gravity closer to the camera body. This dramatically improves balance, reduces strain during long handheld sessions, and makes tracking fast, erratic subjects significantly easier.
G Master Optical Excellence:** Both lenses leverage advanced optical designs, including three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) elements and one ED glass element, to suppress aberrations and deliver high resolution from the center to the edges. Proprietary Nano AR Coating II minimizes ghosting and flare.
Speed Meets Intelligence:** Dual XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors provide fast, precise, and quiet autofocus, fully compatible with the Alpha 9 III’s blistering 120 fps continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking.
Stable Shooting, Any Conditions:** Built-in optical image stabilization reduces camera shake at extreme focal lengths. Both lenses feature dust and moisture resistance, a fluorine coating on the front element, and are compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters (reaching up to 1200mm).

Pricing & Availability:
Both lenses are scheduled to begin shipping in **October 2026**.
FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS:** Suggested retail price of **$2,699.99 USD**.
FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS:** Suggested retail price of **$3,699.99 USD**.

A Handheld Revolution for Long-Lens Creators
Every so often, a technological leap occurs that forces us to rethink our entire approach to a creative discipline. With the announcement of the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, Sony has not just released two new lenses; they have unlocked a new way of working for super-telephoto photographers.

1. The Death of the Monopod Necessity
For decades, shooting 400mm or 600mm primes meant committing to a heavy, formidable piece of glass that required a tripod, a monopod, or a significant physical toll for handheld use. By making these lenses weigh less than 1 kilogram each—effectively cutting the weight of their faster-aperture cousins by more than half—Sony is enabling true mobility. You can now hike for miles, explore unpredictable environments, and react instantly to fleeting moments without being tethered to support gear. This is a game-changer for active wildlife, bird, and travel creators.

2. Strategic Compromise on Aperture for Major Gains in Agility
Sony made a conscious choice here, offering F4.5 and F6.3 maximum apertures instead of the classic F2.8 and F4. In modern photography, where camera sensor low-light performance (ISO) is extraordinary and computational noise reduction is highly effective, the loss of one to one-and-a-half stops of light is a strategic trade-off. What you gain in portability, balance, and handheld stamina far outweighs the slight compromise in light-gathering for many professional and enthusiast shooters who value mobility above all else.

3. Defining "Handheldable" Professional Glass
The focus on shifting the center of gravity is crucial. A light lens can still feel awkward if it's front-heavy. Sony’s careful redistribution of mass near the camera body makes these long primes feel like an extension of the system, encouraging a dynamic, active shooting style that was previously impossible. This isn't just "lighter"; it is "smarter" engineering for the physical reality of on-location photography.

Sony has once again used its engineering prowess to identify a specific pain point—the sheer physical burden of super-telephoto primes—and solved it with elegant, high-performance technology.
