Quibi, pronounced "kwib-ee," is launching today, offering short-form videos from big names to watch on your phone during your commute.
The launch came with 175 new shows, ranging from scripted drama to real-life celebrity stories. Qubi has raised $1.75 billion to fund the shows.
The videos are less than ten minutes in length and are available in a format specifically designed to be viewed on a smartphone. Should you watch Quibi series on a smartphone, you'll see entirely different edits depending on how you hold your phone. Some moments have entirely different footage based on screen orientation.
However, Quibi is yet to introduce some of the promised features that will come to that portrait mode, such as the ability to flip up the screen and see an app on a character's phone. The company has also said that shows in the future will use the clock, GPS and sensors of the smartphone itself to customise what is happening in the show.
The app also includes a host of limitations. Users are unable to take screenshots of shows and cannot send what they are watching to a television.
Here’s the how the company describes Quibi:

Quibi offers three categories of content:

Quibi is partnering with some of the most trusted names in news, information, and entertainment to give you everything you need to know – and why it matters.
Quibi, available for Android and iOS, costs either $4.99 a month with ads, or $7.99 a month without. Outside of the US, Quibi didn’t sell any ad inventory so you can only sign up for the ad-free plan.
That makes it more expensive than Apple TV+ and Disney+. The good news is you can test it yourself thanks to a full 90-day free trial.
