Calimetrics’ Technology Implemented in New Chip From Sanyo

Calimetrics’ Technology Implemented in New Chip From Sanyo

General Interest Mar 16,2002 0

Calimetrics, Inc. announced that Sanyo Semiconductor has released the ML™ ENDEC, a standard integrated circuit (IC) that triples the capacity and performance of CD-R/RW drives. The new chip, the first IC to implement the MultiLevel (ML™) Recording technology developed by Calimetrics, is used in a prototype ML CD-R/RW burner with two gigabyte (2 GB) CD capacity. The Sanyo ML ENDEC includes all the analog and digital functions necessary to read and write ML discs at up to 48 times CD-R speed using conventional CD-R/RW optical pickup units and ML-specific firmware. Industry standard data and microprocessor interfaces provide the flexibility to integrate ML technology into standard drive designs with minimal changes.

“The ML ENDEC is designed for compatibility and ease of integration. Manufacturers can easily build this chip into CD drives providing fast and affordable backup and storage for home or business use as well as new types of devices such as personal video recorders or video players,” commented Akira Shirakawa of Sanyo Semiconductor Company.

“With its applicability to both CD and DVD, we see ML technology being integrated into many devices – cost effectively increasing capacity and performance.”

TDK’s ML-enhanced drive prototype reads and writes data to both 2 GB ML-enhanced optical media blanks and conventional CD-R/RW discs. This support for both “legacy” CD-R/RW and enhanced media highlights the value of ML technology as a very cost-effective offering extending the benefits of CDs and DVDs to future higher capacity systems.

“The addition of MultiLevel recording marks a major advance in the development of cost-effective super-high density optical recording systems. The ML-enhanced CD-RW drive is ideally suited to the needs of office or home users who need a fast, affordable way to backup and archive large amounts of data,” said Jean-Paul Eekhout, Head of Marketing of TDK Recording Media Europe.

“The support of these industry leaders and the ML Alliance as well as the demonstrated increases in performance, capacity and value, illustrates the benefit of ML technology for the enterprise and desktop storage markets as well as to all kinds of new consumer electronics devices,” said Ken Campbell, president and CEO of Calimetrics.
