Apple Expects Strong Sales For Apple TV This Week, Amazon to Sell to Over 8 Million Kindles

Apple expects sales of its new Apple TV to top one million units later this week, while Amazon.com Inc. is likely to sell more than 8 million Kindle electronic-book readers this year. The new Apple TV offer simple way to watch HD movies and TV shows, stream content from Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and MobileMeā„ , all on an HD TV for a price of just $99. iTunes users are now renting and purchasing over 400,000 TV episodes and over 150,000 movies per day, according to Apple.

Now with AirPlay, recently available in iOS 4.2, users can wirelessly stream their music, video and photos from iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to their new Apple TV. Users can also control Apple TV with their iPad, iPhone or iPod touch using the Remote app, available as a free app on the App Store.

Amazon.com Inc. is also expecting to sell more than 8 million Kindle electronic-book readers this year, significantly more than analysts have predicted.

Digital book reader Kindle was unveiled in 2007. Today the device vies with Sony's and Barnes & Noble's offerings, as well as with Apple's iPad device.

Amazon sells three versions of the Kindle. The $139 model downloads books, magazines and newspapers via Wi-Fi only. Another costs $189 and works over both Wi-Fi and 3G wireless networks. The larger Kindle DX costs $379.
