Samsung Electronics said Thursday it has struck a deal with U.S. broadcasting companies to collaborqate on the adoption of the ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standard for digital TVs. The South Korean giant signed a memorandum of understanding with Pearl LLC and Sinclair Broadcast Group in Washington on Wednesday to promote the Advanced Television System Committee 3.0.

The ATSC 3.0 includes a set of standards developed by the committee for digital television transmission over terrestrial, cable and satellite networks. Its faster transmission speed than European or Japanese systems allows multi-channel broadcasting via more various signals and formats.

Under the agreement, the companies will introduce the broadcasting system to the U.S. government and TV network operators in a bid to make it the standard for next-generation digital TVs.

Samsung and One Media, Sinclair's joint-venture technology partner, contributed to the ATSC 3.0 process in May. The UHD TV transmission technology the two companies jointly proposed was chosen as an interim standard.

The MPEG media transport technology based on Internet protocol technology, developed by Samsung, has also been selected as the next digital broadcast standard in North America and Japan.
