Fraunhofer Showcases Autostereoscopic 3D Displays at CeBIT 2010

Fraunhofer Showcases Autostereoscopic 3D Displays at CeBIT 2010

Consumer Electronics Mar 3,2010 0

Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) presented autostereoscopic (no glasses) 3D displays and solutions for 3DTV. 3D autostereoscopic displays don?t need extra technical headgear like shutter glasses or color-filter glasses. The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute was a leading mover in the development of the 'Two View Solution' for autostereoscopic displays that was patented in 2001.

At the Special 'Next Level 3D' HHI showcased two autostereoscopic systems ? one analog and one digital. Both display use eye-tracking to allow viewers to move around fairly freely and still view perfect 3D. The system is controlled by contact-free gesture. The analog display uses mechanics to adjust the images to the viewing angle; its picture quality is the highest now achievable anywhere in the world, HHI claims.

The digital display uses electronics to adjust the viewing angle. HHI claims that it is robust keenly priced.

At CeBIT 2010 the 3D Live Studio also demonstrated camera synchronization made easy by using microHD cameras by Fraunhofer IIS and Fraunhofer HHI?s Stereoscopic Analyzer STAN. Integration with a production studio and distribution of 3D data over the Internet with H.264 real-time coding also forms part of the scenario. These technologies were developed in the PRIME project ? Production and Projection Techniques for Immersive Media ? funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. On the European level the 3D4YOU project is developing a 3D broadcast system that should set benchmarks for a pan-European 3DTV network.
