Sony Signals 'Style' With New Designs for DVD Player and Home Theater System

Sony Signals 'Style' With New Designs for DVD Player and Home Theater System

Optical Storage Sep 6,2001 0

With the spotlight on design, Sony Electronics today presented its most creative DVD-Video player and home theater system to redefine contemporary style. Among the showcased entertainment products are an innovative DVD Style3(TM) (also known as DVD Style Cube(TM)) player and a powerful new DVD Dream(TM) system with multi-channel Super Audio CD (SACD) capability.

``People may be attracted to our DVD Style Cube and DVD Dream systems based on their sleek good looks alone,'' said Tim Baxter, senior vice president of Sony's Home Entertainment Products Division. ``But these models also contain an abundance of features for real entertainment value along with head-turning design.''

Three-Position DVD Player

The DVD Style3 player (model DVP-F21) stands out with its three-position functionality, slim shape and slot-loading disc mechanism. The player, which can be used vertically, horizontally or hanging on a wall, is versatile enough to complement any audio/video system, whether in an ultra-modern living room, a stylish bedroom, a hip dorm room or a high-tech office. This model's flexibility permits it to be used as a primary or secondary room application.

The DVD Style3 player features Sony's Precision Drive2(TM) System, a new tilt mechanism providing faster and more accurate tracking and playback of DVDs. Precision Drive2 allows viewers to watch their favorite DVDs -- whether they are part of an owner's library or one of the increasing number of rentals available -- despite most imperfections or physical flaws on the disc.

Another plus is the unit's TV Virtual Surround Sound circuitry. Benefiting non-home theater users, this feature optimizes the sound capabilities of standard TV speakers and offers various modes. These modes include ``dynamic,'' ``wide,'' ``standard'' and ``night'' for sound reduction of loud passages during late hours. The surround circuitry also creates a virtual center channel for clearer dialogue reception.

Other features of the DVD Style3 player include advanced SmoothScan(TM) Picture Search for seamless transitions between video frames; and Custom Parental Control, which prohibits access to discs with a personalized code, even if the disc doesn't carry a Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rating.

Block Noise Reduction suppresses vertical edge distortions for a smoother, more natural DVD picture. And, the CD-R/CD-RW audio playback capability allows the consumer to play discs from a CD burner.

To maximize the sound reproduction of the new DVD Style3 player, an optional matching speaker package (SA-F21), a two-channel system with subwoofer, will be available for around $200 via select retailers or at http://www.sonystyle.com.

Offered in two colors, silver or black, the DVD Style3 player will be available at dealer locations in October for about $300.

A Simple Solution for Great Home Theater

The new DVD Dream system (model DAV-C900) packs 450 watts of total system power* with Dolby Digital(TM) and dts® decoding into a simple, one-box, home theater solution. Innovative, mini-tower speaker columns house the four, advanced slimline satellite speakers, accompanied by a center-channel speaker and a subwoofer with an 8-inch driver. The addition of Sony's new S-Master (TM) integrated full digital amplifier creates high power efficiencies and low heat generation, allowing for a slim, compact profile. Among its many other features, the silver-toned DVD/CD/SACD five-disc changer sports a preprogrammed universal remote that glows in the dark and can rest on each of its three sides.

The DVD Dream system will be available at select Sony dealer locations in October for around $1,000.

The Multi-Channel Experience for Audio and Video

Consumers are now experiencing the excitement of surround sound in great numbers at home, via the explosion of DVD movie titles. Likewise, music lovers can also experience high-resolution, 5.1 channel audio from a growing selection of SACD titles. More than 300 SACD titles have announced to date, including over 50 multi-channel releases from Sony Music Entertainment and other labels.

Creating entertainment value for consumers in today's home theater, all of Sony's new DVD Dream systems and several of its new DVD players have multi-channel SACD playback capability.

The DVD Dream system line contains two other models that are currently available with SACD playback capability -- the single-disc DAV-S500 model and the five-disc DAV-C700 changer. Prices for each model are about $600 and $700, respectively.

Lastly, several new Sony DVD-Video players will also feature multi-channel SACD capability. Model DVP-NS500V, a single-disc player, will sell for around $300; the five-disc DVP-NC650V changer will sell for around $400, and a single-disc model, the DVP-NS900V, will cost about $1,000. All three of these DVD players will be available in September.
