NEC Supports Wireless USB with new LSI

NEC Supports Wireless USB with new LSI

Enterprise & IT Sep 20,2005 0

NEC Electronics has completed the development of an LSI system that supports the Wireless USB standard. The Wireless USB standard is backed by the Wireless USB Promoter Group (Microsoft, Philips, NEC, Samsung, HP, etc). The Group announced the specifications of the Wireless USB last May. According to the standard, PC and peripherals can be connected wirelessly and exchange data at high transfer rates. The standard consists of the wireless part (physical layer) and the USB part (logical layer), and adopts the UWB (Ultra Wide Band) technology. The Wireless USB technology combines the speed and security of wired USB, with a bandwidth of 480Mb/sat 3 meters and 110Mb/S at 10 meters.

NEC's new LSIs include the "μPD720170", which is a host controller that can be installed in a PC or in any digital consumer device, and the "μPD720180", which can be installed to any peripheral device in order to communicate under the Wireless USB standard.

The Japanese company announced that the first samples of the LSIs will be shipped by the end of 2005.
