Mobile World Congress Kicks Off On Monday

Mobile World Congress Kicks Off On Monday

Smartphones Feb 22,2013 0

The Mobile World Congress starts om Monday in Barcelona - a huge, four-day event where exhibitors including Nokia, Samsung, LG, HTC and Sony will showcse their new handsets, apps and connected technology. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will be among the keynote speakers and the Finnish firm is expected to launch a new flagship Windows Phone 8, which is rumored to feature great camera capabilities. Nokia is also set to announce more affordable Lumia handsets as well as basic models in an attempt to fend off competition from Chinese rivals Huawei and ZTE, in the low-end market.

Speaking of Chinese makers, Huawei and ZTE are expected to launch flagship Android devices equipped with large displays. ZTE has also partnered with NVIDIA to deliver the first super phones powered by the NVIDIA Tegra 4 mobile processor, with the first models to reach the market before mid-year. ZTE is expected to launch the first Tegra 4 super phones in China in the first half of 2013. ZTE is also rumored to debut a smartphone that runs on the Firefox operating system.

LG has already announced its updated Optimus G series, as well as its LTE-enabled Optimus F Series of smarphones, which will be on stage at the company's booth. The Korean company has also annoucned its own interpretation of a tablet-notebook hybrid device at the event. The 11.6-inch device is equiped with Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology and is running Windows 8 OS.

Asus has been also chosing the MWC stage to showacase its new mobile products and tablets. According to this video, the Taiwanese company this year is embracing the 'metallic miracle'and will showcase the 'ultimate craftmanship' - where 'Pad and Phone come together'. We cannot be sure of what this means but expect it to be big.

Do not expect to see the new Samsung Galaxy SIV at MWC, as the South Korean tech giant is expected to host a special event in March. However, the company will launch some major products next week.

HTC has already announced the new HTC One last week.

In addition, Google's Android OS will not be present, at least in Google's own products.

Besides smartphones, wearable gadgets that monitor health and activity are expected top be announced. Qualcomm will demonstrate a new platform that makes gathering and analyzing data from such devices simple, even if they use different forms of communication and measurement. The company has partnered with the American Heart Association to launch the initiative and is encouraging visitors to the event, which starts on February 25, to wear activity tracking devices and to share the data on the platform.
