Nvidia Reports Quarterly Earnings

Nvidia Reports Quarterly Earnings

GPUs May 10,2013 0

Nvidia posted first-quarter earnings and revenue for the quarter and said that the first Tegra 4 devices will be announced soon. The chipmaker reported first-quarter revenue rose to $954.7 million on Thursday, from $924.9 million in the year-ago quarter. It said revenue in the current quarter would be $975 million, plus or minus 2 percent.

First-quarter net income was $77.9 million, or 13 cents a share, compared to $60.4 million, or 10 cents a share, in the same quarter last year.

"The success of Kepler-based GPUs within and beyond the PC helped drive another quarter of record margins," said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and chief executive officer of NVIDIA. "Kepler is capturing share among gamers, strengthening our workstation and supercomputing segments, and will fuel new growth opportunities for our GRID server graphics solutions. With Tegra 4 devices and Tegra 4i certification on the way, we're gearing up to return to growth in the second half."

The first mobile devices to use Nvidia's Tegra 4 chips will be announced this quarter, meaning smartphones and tablets based on the new processor should be available soon.

In addition, the company's own handheld gaming console, Project Shield, will ship with Tegra 4 in the second quarter.

On Thursday, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said tablets are in development and that other devices with Tegra 4 will be announced this quarter. Calling it the "highest performance" mobile processor, Huang said many Android devices are being built around Tegra 4. More products will launch through the second half of the year.

"Outside of phones, where we see these new computing devices becoming like entry-level PCs, performance matters," Huang said, during Nvidia's quarterly earnings call Thursday.

Tegra 4 is based on an ARM Cortex-A15 processor design with the CPU running at a clock speed of 1.9GHz. The chip has 72 graphics cores and is capable of handling games at a maximum resolution of 3200 by 2000 pixels.

The Nvidia Tegra 4i SoC has a modified Cortex-A9 design and an integrated, software-defined LTE radio. Carriers are certifying the Tegra 4i for use in devices that could be available in the second half of the year, Huang said.
