Samsung To Launch New High-end Smart TVs In March

Samsung To Launch New High-end Smart TVs In March

Consumer Electronics Feb 8,2012 0

Samsung said Wednesday that it plans to put its new lineup of high-end smart TVs on the global market by the end of next month. Samsung Electronics unveiled the ES8000 lineup of high-end smart 3D LED TVs, equipped with voice (30 languages) and motion recognition functions using the devices remote control.

Samsung's remote is featuring a voice recognition function and a touch pad. Also, the keys for changing channels and sound volume are located on the sides of the touch pad so that the user can change them without looking at the keys, Samsung said. Samsung has also improved transmission and reception between the remote and the TV by using Bluetooth and infrared communication at the same time. The remote can also be used for controlling a set-top box or a Blu-ray Disc player.

Samsung's ES8000 Full HD LED TVs feature the Micro Dimming Ultimate technolgy, which analyzes the picture in hundreds of pieces to optimize the LED backlight and video signal for each piece in real time, by increasing peak whites in areas of lower gradation. This leads to an overall 20 percent increase in brightness, richer colors and higher contrast ratios. Samsung claims that the technology also eliminates the "halo" effect and image distortion associated with diffused light. The 0.2 inch ultra-slim bezel design, first introduced in 2011, also returns for the company's premium models.

Consumers will be also able to upgrade the capabilities of the Internet-connected TVs by inserting a so-called "evolution kit" into a slot on the back of the set, instead of having to buy a new TV when the set is out of date, according to Samsung.

The models, available in sizes of between 46 and 65 inches, will go on sale from this weekend in South Korea before a global launch in March.

Samsung has seen TV sales firming up so far this year and also plans to introduce cheaper TVs, as demand for lower-end models increase.

Samsung has gained market share in recent years from the Sony, Panasonic and Sharp which have struggled with a soaring Japanese yen and less competitive product line-ups.

Samsung, which sold around 43 million flat-screen TVs last year, aims to sell 50 million TVs this year with half the shipments Internet-enabled.

Samsung also hopes to introduce a smart TV run on Google's operating platform by the end of this year, amid growing interest in arch-rival Apple?s soon-to-be launched smart TV.
