Google Voice Allows Porting Of Existing Mobile Number

Google Voice Allows Porting Of Existing Mobile Number

Smartphones Jan 26,2011 0

Google updated the Google Voice software to allow users to enjoy the service's features without having to give up their long-time phone numbers. Starting from today, the Number Porting feature is available for all existing Google Voice users. This means users can make the mobile number they've always used their Google Voice number, so it can ring any phone they want - or even their computer.

To get started with Number Porting, users should log in to their Google Voice account, visit the Settings page and click on "Change / Port" next to their Google Voice number.

Porting a number to Google Voice costs $20 and is usually completed within 24 hours, Google said. However, users may incur additional charges, including early termination fees, from their wireless carrier.

Porting a number to Google Voice cancels a user's mobile service plan, and there are a couple of steps that the user has to take to continue making and receiving calls on his/her mobile device.

For more detailed instructions on how Number Porting works and to find tips for making the process as smooth as possible, visit the Google Voice Help Center.

Number Porting is currently available for existing Google Voice users and will become available to new users within the next few weeks, and at this time, Google Voice is available in the U.S. only.
